What a day to be a Casuarina Beach Baabaa.
To celebrate 25 years of Casuarina Beach Rugby Club & a decade of Senior rugby, the Busted Baabaas ran out for the inaugural Busteds v Casuarina Old Boys fixture — and if the rugby gods are willing, the first of many.

The Busteds came with notable reinforcements. 105-test Wallaby Rob Simmons lined up at 10 — arguably the biggest fly-half in the history of the game, and 154-test Wallaby prop James Slipper ran the water & port, clearly over-qualified but never complained, and ably assisted by Peter Wallace-Harris. For the Old Boys, Life Members Jack Pick, Adam Leach & Adam Wallace-Harris played, joined by Team of the Decade representatives Sam Harrison, Mitch Planten & Pat Williams — who all reminded everyone exactly why they earned that honour 💪

Although seemingly outgunned on paper, the Busteds held their own. Barney Waerea crossed for two tries & showcased his athletic prowess, while Jono Dowsett was a tackling machine. Rusty & Seb popped up everywhere as only Rusty & Seb can. The two Big Horses — Tristan & Kayne — didn't shirk from the hard carries up the middle while John Jenkins retired the red shorts after one match & was a yapping terrier all game. The pace & physicality may have left most us somewhere around 2014, but the skill was still there for all to see 🤔😅

The most pleasing aspect, though, was the tremendous spirit in which the game was played — a true reflection of what this great club stands for.
Massive thanks to Brian Laybutt, Aaron Sheppard, Mike Elliston & Adam Wallace-Harris for pulling it all together. To Richie White for the lamb on the spit. To Mikaere Penitito for reffing. To Mike & Karryn Gavenlock, Richard Scott-Hunter, Rachel Griffiths & Sarah Lowes for running the canteen, and to Chloe Dowsett for the superb acoustic performance with the guitar. Match Report: Busted Baabaas & Toothless Gators Friday 17th July. The inaugural home game of the Busted Baabaas.

With a packed deck of around a dozen people absolutely going nuts it was tremendous scenes all round to kick the night off.

The weather had been an issue all day, back and forth on whether we'd actually play — howling winds and torrential downpours. But knowing the mental fortitude of our guys and the quality of the pitch, we were always confident it would go ahead. Council confirmation came through to use the grounds, so it was lights, action, rugby — in slow motion.

Both teams had 13 players, so we decided to play league. Well, the Gators decided — lots of one-off hit-ups, nothing like the flashy, scintillating rugby the Busted Baabaas treated the packed deck to. Plenty of oohs and aahs, and the occasional "where's my beer?" from the knowledgeable crowd.
We wouldn't call it champagne rugby — more like cheap sparkling wine with the odd warm beer thrown in — but there were some absolute highlights.

The one and only Mikaere Penitito brilliantly controlled what was at times a turbulent match — Jenks's red shorts and red-faced blow-ups included — keeping the game flowing and letting the athletes do their thing. This allowed the Busteds to concentrate on their game, and if you look at the stats, they won all their scrums, all their lineouts, and didn't drop a high ball all game. Outstanding stuff.

At the end of the day the last try went to the good guys. We can't recall the exact score — but rugby was the winner, as it should always be.
The day wouldn't have been nearly as successful without a number of people. Big shout out to the three Johns — Aussie Jono (AJ), Pommy John (PJ), and Taffy John (TJ) — and everyone else who got down early and helped set things up. Great work, Johns and co.

The biggest shout out, though, goes to Lesa. We all love having Lesa down on Wednesdays — she keeps the place classy and civil. She turned up to help, saw none of the fantastic rugby, and spent the whole time behind the counter taking match funds, raffle money, and drink vouchers. We really owe you one, Lesa 🥂🤝🏉

Match Report: Ballina Battered Prawns Mini-Fest, Saturday 27/6/26.

The Busted Baabaas made the trip to Ballina for another golden oldies hit-out, and if the recent Friday night fixture at Gators was played in the right spirit, this one was played in the right conditions — proper, old-school mud. The kind kids and adults alike rarely get to experience these days.

The Busteds man of the match went to Tristan Weatherill — aka Big Horse — who ran the show at 10, ghosting across the field and throwing dummies that earnt Stephen Larkham comparisons. High praise which Tristan took it in his large stride.
Honorable mention to Jono Dowset who had the look and form of a 90s vintage halfback, throwing some Gregan-esq bullet passes.

Special mention and thanks to Stixs for his outstanding transportation services — a role he appears to have made his own, and Fat Pat Flounder, who came down from Gators to get involved, onya Fat Pat.

Lastly a big thanks to Ballina Battered Prawns for hosting. The refreshments, food, rugby commradarie and atmosphere were all superb. Mud and all 🤝🏉🍻

Busted Baabaas Over-35s match Report | Friday Night at Gators

The Busted Baabaas made the trip to Palm Beach Alleygators' home ground last Friday night for what turned out to be one of those evenings that reminds you exactly why you fell in love with rugby union in the first place.

Four teams — the Busted Baabaas, Griffith Uni Knights (the Late Knights), the Palm Beach Alleygators (the Toothless Gators), and the Bond Pirate Buccaneers — came together under the lights for an evening of Golden Oldies over-35s rugby that delivered everything you'd want from the format: open running, some satisfyingly solid collisions, and not a stretcher in sight.

Hosted by Palm Beach, the night had a great atmosphere from the outset. The rugby was played in the right spirit — competitive enough to get the blood pumping, loose enough to let the backs actually see the ball. There were moments of genuine open play that had the sideline buzzing, and enough physicality in the forwards to remind a few blokes that their bodies aren't quite 25 anymore. Pleasingly, everyone walked off under their own steam with no major injuries reported — always the headline you want from a Golden Oldies fixture.

Special mention to Richard Finlay, Dylan Edwards, Troy Venter, Jamie Laidlaw, and Barney Waerea — these blokes put in the kind of shifts that get talked about in the car on the way home. The chat afterwards captured the mood well. "That is the most rugby fun I've had in years," said one returning player, while another noted the "awesome team, hard-hitting forwards" and a third simply called it "a brilliant night."

A big thanks to the Toothless Gators for hosting a cracking night — the ground, the welcome, and the post-match beers were all on point 🤝🏉🍻
