🌿 Introducing Our 2025 QLD Māori Rugby League Strip 🌿
This year’s jersey is more than just a design — it’s a taonga.
A collaboration that carries our whakapapa, our unity, and our story.
Earlier this year, we reached out to tā moko artist Damion Scarlett, who took our kaupapa to his students at Te Kura Takiwa o Opononi - Opononi Area School in Aotearoa.
Together, they created something truly special — a design that connects our people across the moana and reminds us that wherever we stand, we carry our whānau, our culture, and our pride with us.
Damion’s pepeha:
Pirongia te maunga
Waipā te awa
Tainui te waka
Rākaunui te marae
Moana Kahakore te whare tūpuna
Ngāti Maniapoto te iwi
Ngāti Ngutu te hapū
Kāwhia moana, Kāwhia kai, Kāwhia tangata
✨ The Kōrero Behind the Design
Shoulders: The Puhoro patterns represent the winds of the north and south — guidance and momentum. Beneath them, the Koro motifs stand for the east and west winds, bringing balance and direction from all corners.
Body: The Kaokao represent each player’s whānau — past and present — who continue to guide them on their journey. Woven through are Niho Taniwha, symbolising the unique paths, challenges, and decisions each player has faced to reach this point.
Back: The Poutama acknowledges the people — whānau, mentors, and friends — who have supported every step of their rugby league journey.
Front: The Poutama continues, reflecting who our players are today — and who they’re becoming.
Moko: The Mangopare embodies strength, resilience, and mana, while Kōwhai Ngutu Kākā symbolises unity — the team moving forward together as one, bound by shared purpose and collective strength.
Our kaimahi and supporters’ merch also carry these patterns — the winds on the shoulders, and the design on the back — because this kaupapa belongs to all of us.
Every player, coach, volunteer, and supporter is part of the journey.
Ngā mihi nui to Damion and his students for gifting us this design — a piece of home that we’ll wear with pride here in Queensland.
