Supplements Saturday: Dietary Nitrates
If you're using beetroot specifically for exercise performance, the important variable isn't simply beetroot.
It's nitrate.
Dietary nitrate can contribute to nitric oxide production through a pathway involving something surprisingly important: bacteria in your mouth.
Research supports nitrate supplementation for particular exercise-performance situations, but product selection matters.
For everyday nutrition:
Choose nitrate-rich vegetables.
For targeted performance supplementation:
Choose a reputable product with a clearly stated nitrate content.
Research commonly uses around 350–500 mg nitrate approximately 2–3 hours before exercise.
Don't simply check how much beetroot is in the product.
Check how much nitrate it actually provides.
