Why regular shoeing matters:
The angle of the hoof directly affects the load on tendons.

Stretching your farrier schedule to "just another couple of weeks" isn't the saving it looks like. That routine appointment protects some of the most important structures in your horse's leg.

A UK study (Leśniak et al., 2017) measured horses' feet before and after farriery found that regular trimming improved the hoof's alignment, reducing the dorsal wall, correcting angles and easing the strain on the structures at the back of the foot.

As the hoof grows, hoof balance gradually shifts. The toe lengthens, the breakover moves forward and the load on the deep digital flexor tendon increases.

Researchers concluded that a regular farriery interval of no more than 4 - 6 weeks can reset the foot before tendon load builds into something harmful.

The deep digital flexor tendon runs down the back of your horse's leg and under the foot. When it's injured, it can be serious and one of the hardest to rehabilitate problems a horse can face.

Prevention is always better than a cure - a few weeks isn't worth a year of rehabilitation.

Bad scaffold (bone) = bad capsule?

Or bad capsule = bad bone.

Here we see a horrible hoof capsule and an equally horrible bone that is located inside it

What do I mean by horrible?
- the perimeter is not a smooth arc shape
- it’s pitted with bone loss
- it’s super thin at its perimeter
- it has a pronounced crena. Pretty big, probably ok but bigger than “normal”
- it’s foramina (blood vessels) that feed the circumflex are very low to the ground, signifying significant bone loss on the solar view.

I see so many coffin bones in my studies and there is one clear correlation.

If I see a distorted capsule with long-standing cracks or disease then I can bet I’ll see a distorted unhealthy coffin bone.

A thin sole with a flat foot will often show a flat coffin bone with a lot of bone loss round its perimeter.

A forward run low heel will generally show loss of bone in the palmar processes on their palmar side.

A typical chronic laminitic foot will have profound bone loss.

It’s frightening.

The bone does not lie

It keeps its history written on its surface and also inside.

We may eventually trim a most beautiful capsule but will the bone inside ever repair? I don’t think so.
