Life Membership Presentation - Gerard ‘Browny’ Brown
At last nights awards, we were pleased to announce our newest life member of the Burracoppin Football Club - Gerard Brown.
Gerard has given an incredible 10 continuous years of service to the Burracoppin Football Club, both on and off the field. Gerard has played an impressive 284 senior career games, including 119 games with Burracoppin. During his time with the club, he has been recognised as our weekly Best Player on 36 occasions and has kicked 32 goals.
He has also proudly represented Burracoppin at league level, playing three games during Landmark Country Week.
Before returning to Burracoppin in 2016, Gerard played 127 games with University in the Perth Football League, as well as 35 games with the Moora Football Club. During his time at Moora, he kicked five goals and was awarded Best Player an impressive 11 times in just 35 games.
In his years at Burracoppin, Browny has also picked up his fair share of individual recognition. He was awarded League Best Utility Player in both 2016 and 2017, before being named Club Person and League Most Consistent Player in 2018. In 2022, he received the League Coaches Award, and in another season, he was also awarded Reserves Best Utility Player.
Browny has also taken on leadership roles during his playing career, captaining both our Reserves and League sides. But perhaps one of Browny's greatest achievements on the field — or maybe I should say off the field — came back in 2016, when he was part of the team that won the Iron Man competition. Now, I don't think anyone here would question Browny's toughness, determination or willingness to have a crack — so perhaps it was only fitting that he was part of the winning team!
In 2023, Gerard announced his retirement following the Grand Final win in Hyden against Nukarni. But, as anyone who knows Browny would expect, retirement didn't quite mean staying away from the footy club!
He came back a couple of times to fill in when needed, and this year he decided that the boots weren't quite ready to be hung up after all — so back onto the field he went.
But Gerard's contribution to the Burracoppin Football Club goes well beyond what he has achieved on the football field.
For the past 10 years, Browny has also taken on the role of Club Treasurer. Anyone involved in running a football club these days knows that being Treasurer is certainly not the simple job it once was.
With increasing regulations, compliance requirements and administration, the role has become far more demanding.
Browny's responsibilities haven't been limited to simply looking after the club's finances. He has also taken care of a large part of the administration for our travelling players, making sure contracts, payments and all the other requirements are kept in order. Over the years, he has also put his hand up for fundraising, seeking sponsorship for the club, helping organise social events and managing PlayHQ.
And even when Browny briefly retired from playing, he didn't actually retire from the club - he continued on as Treasurer and could still be found around the ground on game days, putting on the fluoro shirt as a runner or water boy.
That's probably the best way to describe Browny — he just doesn't shy away from a job that needs doing. Whether it's setting up, packing away, helping at a busy bee, lending a hand on game day, or taking on the massive job of coordinating the cash side of our Back to Burra Race Night, Browny is always willing to help.
The Race Night has grown into one of our most successful and profitable annual events, and Browny has played a significant role in making that happen. What makes this award so deserving is that Gerard's contribution isn't measured by just the number of games he's played, the awards he's received or the goals he's kicked.
It's measured by the countless hours, the behind-the-scenes work, the jobs that need to be done when nobody is watching, and his willingness to simply get in and help the club.
That's what makes a great club person.
And perhaps that's what makes Browny such a deserving Life Member — whether he's wearing the playing jumper, the captain's armband, the fluoro runner's shirt, or sitting behind the Treasurer's desk, he's always found a way to contribute.
So, on behalf of everyone at the Burracoppin Football Club, it is with enormous pride and great honour that we recognise someone who has given so much to our club.
Congratulations, Browny, and thank you for everything you have done — and continue to do — for our club.
