The Curtain Comes Down for the last time at the Newmarket Raceway
Sunday afternoon the 28th of June saw the last race meeting held at the Newmarket Raceway and what a fabulous afternoon it was, a bumper crowd was on hand to witness the 11 race card and help celebrate and say goodbye to over 100 years of racing in the Silver City with the past 52 years being held at the Newmarket Raceway.
Greyhound Racing New South Wales announced earlier this year that the track would cease racing as part of an optimisation strategy, with this decision still not understood or accepted within the local industry and community as a whole, it was noted that among the hundreds at the track there was not one representative from GRNSW to be seen, obviously saying goodbye to100 years of racing history for Broken Hill didn’t warrant their attendance or even a media statement to acknowledge the final meeting in the city, an absolute disgrace by GRNSW it just goes to show the care factor they have and have shown throughout this whole process for the greyhound participants and the far west community in general.
Trainer and race caller Jason McCarthur made announcements throughout the night, sharing history of the track and its trainers from across the decades and thanking the many participants, staff and sponsors that have been part of this fantastic club.
In his speech Club President Regan Edgecumbe noted even though it was a sad night, he was buoyed by the support shown by the local community and also thanked the many interstate trainers and participants from as far away as Wagga, Adelaide & Mildura who made the long trip to be a part of the final chapter in the history of greyhound racing in Broken Hill.
The greyhound that goes in the history book as the last ever winner at the Newmarket Raceway was Wagga visitor Aunty Meeka for owner trainer Jonathan Crocker, with local greyhound Raven Peter for owner Colby Stenhouse & trainer Kaylene Hatzi having the honour of being the last greyhound to ever cross the winning post at the track.
After the last race to cheers from the crowd a coffin was marched down the home straight to the winning post and the erected headstone to mark the death of greyhound racing in the Hill.
From the President, Committee & Club members of the Broken Hill Greyhound Racing Club we take this opportunity for one last time to thank all track & race day staff, owners & trainers both local & visitors, our many sponsors and the people of Broken Hill and afar for their support of our club over many years.
