Newcastle Hockey is proud to acknowledge the success of a local hero who has joined the ranks of the Order of Australia in the 2026 King's Birthday Honours list, noting that this recipient well and truly meets all 3 of the above criteria.

Peter Sweeney is the current treasurer of the Newcastle Mens Hockey Association (and also the Men’s Masters Committee) and has been part of our executive team for several decades now, earning a place on our Life Member's board in 1995. Peter’s dedication to Hockey also include:

🏑 Hockey Blue & Colours recipient for Newcastle University
🏑 Founding member of Crusaders Hockey Club
Various executive positions at Wests, Crusaders, and the University clubs,
🏑 Former Coach & Rep player in Juniors, U21's, Seniors, and Masters, including representing NSW and Australia
🏑 An incredible level of dedication to Masters Hockey at the local, state, and national levels.

Once again, the annual 𝘼𝙡𝙖𝙣 𝙍𝙞𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙨𝙤𝙣 𝙊60𝙨 𝘾𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙮 𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙫𝙖𝙡 was well represented and played in great spirits, despite the weather being a little warmer 🥵 than we would have preferred.

A sincere thank you to everyone who travelled to participate and to those who came along to support from the sidelines — your involvement is what makes this carnival so special 🚙 ✈️

Special thanks to Malcolm Emmerton, David Pandel and Wayne Parkinson for their tremendous efforts behind the scenes 🤓 — from coordinating nominations and preparing team lists (especially the “presidents 11” 🤔🤣) to the juggling act of organising umpires. As we all know, without the dedication of people like this, the carnival simply wouldn’t happen.

Thank you also to the Newcastle International Hockey Centre for hosting and allowing the carnival to take place.

Last but certainly not least, 𝙏𝙃𝘼𝙉𝙆 𝙔𝙊𝙐 to the 𝙏𝙍𝘼𝙄𝙉 𝙊𝙉 𝙎𝙌𝙐𝘼𝘿 for running the BBQ and keeping everyone well fed across the weekend.

We look forward to welcoming you all back next year for the 21st year of the Alan Richardson Country Carnival — and yes, after a little homework, we can confirm that this year was in fact the 20th year, not the 21st as previously advertised! 🏑
