Elly the Elephant

Elly the Elephant Elly the Elephant is a travelling exhibition a part of a yearlong campaign to raise awareness of family violence within the Mitchell Shire.

The Elly the Elephant is a travelling exhibition and will be part of a yearlong campaign to raise awareness of family violence in our community. Mitchell Shire is ranked 15th out of 79 Councils in the state for police callouts for family violence incidents. It is statistics like this that make us realise that family violence is the ‘elephant in our community’. This is a partnership project between

Mitchell Shire Council and Nexus Primary Health. Elly who is a fibreglass life-sized baby Elephant, will travel throughout Mitchell Shire and be exhibited in a range of venues, including sporting clubs, health centres and neighbourhood houses. At her size, Ellie will certainly be eye catching and is a clever play on the phrase ‘the elephant in the room’. The aim is to inspire the Mitchell community to speak up about family violence in a bid to raise awareness of family violence, to help those who are suffering from family violence and to continue to find preventative measures. People will be encouraged to interact with Elly through ‘feeding’ her with comment slips through the slot on her back. These comments will be posted on this page as 'Elly's food for thought'. To accompany Elly, there will also be information provided about where to find further information and support regarding family violence. You will also be able to track Elly’s travels throughout the shire through this page. Elly will move to a new location approximately once per month. Elly will be launched at a White Ribbon Day event to be held on Saturday 22 November.

Luke Batty would have turned 13 on the weekend. Help stand by Rosie Batty and all victims of domestic violence today and together we will give victims a voice. www.neveralone.com.au

Family violence is every Australian's business. We will stand with the victims of family violence so that they are supported in the community and have a powerful voice in the corridors of power. Join the campaign and help make sure they are never alone.

Another comment fed to Elly:
'Most defintley the 'Elephant in the Room', which is domestic violence, needs to be exposed so that this problem can be handled.

It is well documented that behavior traits, verbal, physical, emotional, are passed down from one generation to the next and the next and infinitum. The abused child invariably becomes an adult abuser and each generation is likely to become more brutal and damaging than the previous one.

In cases where one parent abuses the other, the child is exposed to this on a regular basis and suffers accordingly; not only at that moment, but each time something similar triggers their fear, anger and/or guilt. Siblings who witness abuse of another sibling also suffer the same trauma.

Naming any action that damages others in some way is the first step towards getting the problem out in the open and only then, can steps be taken towards healing. The abuser as well as the abused need help, not be enabled to hide.'
