Welcome to the Writer’s Challenge!

First things first—this isn’t about perfection. It’s about stretching those writing muscles and sparking your creativity. Just have fun with this.

Using the prompt provided, write a short piece between 1,000 and 7,500 words. Some stories may even grow beyond 10,000 words, perhaps less and that’s perfectly okay!

This challenge is all about making the prompt your own—there’s no right or wrong way to interpret it. As you write, consider:

Perspective – Who’s telling the story? Is it you, or are you stepping into someone else’s shoes?

The Senses – What does your character see, hear, feel? Bring the scene to life.

Timeframe – Are you writing in the past or present?

Depth – Explore emotions, dilemmas, and unexpected discoveries along the way.

Read the prompt, take on the challenge, and let your imagination run free. Writing is like a muscle—the more you use it, the stronger it becomes.

Tip: Don’t be afraid to twist the prompt, break the mould, and make it your own!

START SMALL

From the time I could construct a sentence, I dreamed of being a writer. Books were a magical place, a place of beauty, excitement, a place where dreams come true. I wanted to create such magic.
​
These days I have several to my name. But before the first book was written, it seemed unattainable. How could I write a book? Who was I to think I could do such a thing? Where would I even start?
​
It didn’t stop me from making stories in my mind or sharing them with spoken words in safe spaces. I just couldn’t see how to translate that to print.
​
So, I started small… it was a subconscious move. ​ I moved from small Facebook posts to longer ones, then from short blogs to longer ones, to a magazine article, then to a short chapter for a compilation book with some fifty other people. Wow! There it was - my name on the cover of a book!
​
That meant it was time to step up to a book of my own – something that was all mine. It felt overwhelming, so I hired a writing coach who helped me to break it down to be ​ more manageable. I’ve not stepped back since. I’m currently working on a novel and have two more nonfiction books percolating as well. ​
​
Oooh, I think that is what they call ‘living the dream’!
