Happy Saga Dawa πππ
Saga Dawa is one of the most sacred months in the Buddhist lunar calendar.
(17th May-15th June this year)
* βSagaβ refers to the star constellation Saga (often linked with Vishakha/Nakshatra).
* βDawaβ means month in Tibetan.
It is the 4th month of the lunar calendar, and it commemorates the three major events in the life of Gautama Buddha:
1. Birth
2. Enlightenment
3. Parinirvana (passing away)
According to Buddhist tradition, all three are believed to have occurred on the 15th day of Saga Dawa, known as Saga Dawa Duchen.
During this month, Buddhists commonly:
* Perform acts of generosity and compassion
* Avoid killing and harmful actions
* Offer butter lamps and prayers
* Practice vegetarianism
* Circumambulate holy sites
* Recite mantras and sutras
* Release animals (βlife releaseβ)
It is believed that the karmic effects of positive and negative actions are multiplied many times during this holy month.
In the Bhutanese traditions, Saga Dawa is observed with prayers, temple visits, fasting, and merit-making activities.
