Some absolutely beautiful HIGH COUNTRY AUTUMINAL weather has befallen us. Cool evenings and stunning sunny days has cause for some fantastic Fly Fishing. Reports coming in for some excellent trout have been caught (most released) on both Dry and Wet flies. Crystal clear wtaers after our most recent rainfall has the BEST conditions you will find in the HIGH COUNTRY.

More storms on Saturday have seen our High Country streams really absorb the run-off. What were clean, low and productive streams - have turned them into turbid, ugly and high!! Very dangerous IF anyone was silly enough to even attempt to enter the water ... for why? - would be an important question ... anyways ... all of us at SOUTHERN Fly Fishing ADVENTURES would like to pass on our best wishes to ALL our clients (old and new) a WONDERFUL & SAFE Festive season. With any luck at all - our streams will clear soon and we can all get back to what is important - Fly Fishing. Cheers ...

The weather is still playing tricks. Although it does seem to have settled .... a little. A nice 2 & a bit hours on the water on Tuesday produced a FANTASTIC Brown in a little quiet run. We watched the Trout sitting in the run, and then he was spooked, but came back to the back of the run only to swallow the offering. A fat healthy Brown was caught, photographed and released back to the delight of those present. Maybe ... just maybe things are moving forward in a positive way this season.

Coming into Summer??? Cool conditions - rain, wind and even snow? Hmmm going to set for a very interesting season … reports are relatively quiet regarding Trout so far. Fluctuating river levels from rain are not helping but occasionally - just occasionally there are pockets of ‘Rainbow’ gold - here and there makes for anticipation and excitement!! Once the weather settles - things will undoubtedly make for some exciting fly fishing.

Some VERY strange weather of late in the High Country. Snow on the mountains with a interesting amount of rain has made for careful considerations with clients so far this season. YO-YO comes to mind .... AND of course the most IMPORTANT consideration is the SAFETY of all. And we have mentioned this before with our posts - it's not necessarily the clarity of the water (which is obviously a MAJOR factor), - but - the speed of flow. One wrong step onto a slippery rock and one might find oneself drifting into Myrtleford (without a paddle!!!) which is nice if you're into that kind of thing .... but ..... we are here to Fly Fish for Trout...... tight lines!!!

Well folks another Fly Fishing season done!! And to be very honest - it's been an extremely tough season gone. First we had the fish taken by birds then we had minimal water, then a good flush but the fish remained elusive until the end. This year has been one of the more 'stranger' years as so far the way the weather changed and changed again...to the lack of fish (taken by birds) then an average run then it peetered out to be a really tough year. The dry weather hasn't helped out waterways either. Let's hope we can get some good rains (snow has fallen in the High-Country already) but of we can get some solid and significant rains over Winter & Spring - we may be able have a solid season in '25/'26. Again, to our clients old and new - we thank you for your patronage and hope you all enjoyed the interaction either by phone, email or in person. Thank you again = take care. Cheers!!

In fantastic weather conditions yesterday, warm, sunny with a gentle breeze and crystal clear streams - we were able to hit the water with a client in the afternoon. The streams have had a tough time over this current season, and whilst the fishery has also been at times pretty tough going, several Trout were seen rising and -unfortunately missed. I think both the client and I were both quite surprised at the ferocity at which the fly was smashed (but missed). At this time of year most hopper patterns seem to account for most Trout.....which is what we selected. A satisfying afternoon with a fantastic client.... very well done indeed!!! An enjoyable time....it yes it seems there are still plenty of Trout to be caught, however patience seems to be the strategy.

Last Saturday I was joined by a GREAT friend (A.Mc) in a delightful few hours on one of our local streams. Despite tough conditions recently - we were both determined to get at least one Trout. A short time on a stretch of water - usually holding Trout - proved fruitless. A decision was made to simply walk a fair way upstream. After about the 1/2 hour walk through scrub land we found ourselves looking at a rather narrow but crystal clear stream with some outstanding runs. So armed with my short 6'6" Fly rod - I targeted a few runs which gave me delight in hooking up on a few Brown Trout. Relatively small in size, they fought well. And the colours were stunning. Unfortunately A.Mc wasn't so lucky and despite his enthusiasm and efforts - he was hamstrung by the standard 9' rod he was carrying. Overhanging trees and branches caused him a rather frustrating time but missed 2 when he managed to set the fly out. With storms gathering we decided to head home and a few refreshments - another great SOUTHERN Fly Fishing ADVENTURE!!

Amazing!!! We've moved on from our last post where the warm weather had 'improved' the insect life around our High Country streams. However, with this (now) extended warm/hot spell of weather has caused the Trout to now be on the conservative side of things and are using the bubbly oxygenated waters to give a most important ingredient to the Trout 'oxygen'. With the heat creates oxygen to be removed, making the Trout lethargic and less interested in foods floating down stream. This then translates into Dry Flies being ignored for the same reason. Patience and persistence will bring it's own reward.

With some quite warm and humid weather recently - insect life in and around streams has increased dramatically breathing new life into the Trout. Early on - the streams (& reports) were of quiet and unrewarding Fly Fishing. However, with this spell of warmer weather - things have changed, much to the pleasure of most of those venturing & daring to try their hand. Fish are being taken with Dry Flies and good catches have been reported. Some excellent sized Trout have eluded (& broken lines) from some Anglers.

What an amazing transformation from my previous post. The weather 'was' on hold ... but as with all things nature - Saturday proved everyone how nature can move it's miraculous influence. The rain was insane!!! And in some places over 70mls. Hmmm ... this WILL take a while for things to settle again with streams in the High Country in minor flooding. It could take several weeks for everything to get back to 'normal' ... whatever that means??!! For potential clients another 'hurry-up-and-wait' situation. As normal - we will do our best to keep you updated as to the river levels etc. Cheers.
