🚙⛰️🌅 EL QUESTRO, DAY ONE

After leaving Kununurra, our first stop was El Questro Station. We had a few DIY jobs to sort out on Dixie (our caravan), but still made it to Saddleback Ridge just in time for sunset.

💡 Kununurra Diversion Dam was completed in 1963, creating Lake Kununurra years before Lake Argyle was built upstream.
💡 The Cockburn Range is predominantly quartz sandstone, with mineral grains dating back roughly 1.85 billion years.

✈️⛰️🚙 LAKE ARGYLE TO KUNUNURRA

I finished the last few jobs Gibb River Road proofing our caravan before we headed into Kununurra for a scenic flight over Purnululu National Park.

Seeing the East Kimberley from the air was spectacular, especially the colours and formations of the Bungle Bungle Range.

Our replacement caravan battery had finally caught up with us after the wrong one was sent to Darwin. Fitting it didn’t quite go to plan, and our afternoon ended at Kununurra Hospital. Dan needed several stitches and now has to fly back to Darwin for follow-up surgery.

Later that afternoon, I helped him finish replacing the batteries in the caravan and car, while Dan quite literally gave me the bird the entire time. 🖕😂

💡 The Bungle Bungles’ black bands are cyanobacteria; iron gives the exposed sandstone its orange colour.

💡 The sandstone is more than 300 million years old, sculpted into domes by millions of years of erosion.

💡 Annual allocated water diversions (predominantly agriculture and irrigation) are only about 2% of Lake Argyle’s full-storage volume.

🩹✈️🚙 Update on Dan

Dan’s flown back to Darwin to see the specialist, with surgery tomorrow and hopefully a flight back the following day.

It means we’ve had to change our plans and Purnululu will have to wait for another trip. Once Dan’s back, we’ll finish packing up and get ourselves onto the Gibb River Road.

For now, I’m holding the fort and getting everything ready to go. 🤞

🌅🦅🍺 BIG HORSE CREEK TO LAKE ARGYLE

The sunrise over the Victoria River at Big Horse Creek was absolutely beautiful. We also saw two Spotted Harrier, identified by their distinctive underwing pattern.

Lake Argyle was impressive! Some of the colours, shapes and rock formations surrounding the lake actually gave me Arizona vibes.

The water was freezing for Northern Territorians, the b**r was cold, and the sunset cruise was a great way to spend our first afternoon in Western Australia. 🍺🥶

💡 Lake Argyle holds around 10,700 GL at full supply: about 20 Sydney Harbours.

💡 Around 30,000 freshwater crocodiles are estimated to live in Lake Argyle.

🏕️ Two Rivers Campground is now closed to all new bookings. We’ll still welcome a small number of returning guests with existing arrangements, but won’t be taking any new bookings this season.
