Love Rugby Leagueunderstands the Bulls have made the Australian a key recruitment target and have now emerged as the frontrunners to secure his services despite Super League interest elsewhere.

Who is Sean O’Sullivan?

The 28-year-old is currently at the Bulldogs, where he has made six NRL appearances this year. His contract has a mutual one-year option clause but he has been exploring Super League opportunities recently and the Bulls are now in pole position.
To date, he has played 66 times in the NRL across a plethora of clubs, starting with Sydney Roosters before featuring for Brisbane Broncos, New Zealand Warriors, Penrith Panthers, the Dolphins and Canterbury. He played 12 times for the Panthers in 2022 as they won the NRL Grand Final.
A move to Super League now beckons and it looks set to be with the Bulls, who have been looking for a controlling halfback to play alongside Jayden Nikorima next season. The pair are believed to be close friends, which has been a factor in O’Sullivan’s attraction to the Odsal club.

O’Sullivan will have to receive a Governing Body Endorsement (GBE) before any deal can be finalised. Rules state that a player signing from the NRL must have played in 50% of games in the previous two seasons to be eligible, something O’Sullivan hasn’t done. However, there are other considerations that can reduce that percentage, such as time spent injured or being named as 18th man.

Bulldogs back-rower Jacob Preston’s new deal is set to soar towards the $1 million mark after inking a new contract to stay at Belmore.
Sport Confidential can reveal Preston has a ratchet deal in his four-year contract that will see him get a major pay rise in line with the proposed increase of the NRL salary cap in 2028.
There were reports Preston’s upgraded contract does not contain a ratchet clause but the NSW Origin hopeful’s deal will indeed cater for a salary-cap spike.
Preston’s upgraded deal starts at $800,000 a season. The NRL salary cap is tipped to rise by at least 20 per cent for 2028, meaning the Bulldogs star’s salary could rise to $960,000 in the first year of his new deal.

Canterbury have come within a whisker of losing prop Sam Hughes for next year.
The 25-year-old had a contract withSuper League club Catalans all ready to sign last week, before the Bulldogs came back with a one-year extension offer.

Hughes has only played eight NRL games so far this season and hasn’t featured since round 10, but decided to accept the offer and will remain at Belmore.
After that, he is likely to head to Super League, where several clubs – headed by Catalans – are keen to pick him up.
With plenty of size and nearly 50 first grade games to his name, Hughes is developing nicely in the toughest position on the field.
Perth were keen to pick him up for their maiden season, but the deal never got over the line.
