How to Butterfly Kick:

One of the more advanced kicks we drill is the Butterfly Kick. It certainly leans towards the "arts" side of self defence, however, it is a testament to someones athleticisim, explosiveness and skill to be able to execute it effectively.

Here Ali is leading the class in the breakdown of the kick by practicing our vertical leap while holding our knees in close to our chest. The second phase is flicking the legs out simultaneously at the height of the jump.

HIP THROW:
One of the first throws we teach at Hapkido is the Hip Throw. It's an effective way to get an attacker from their feet onto the floor where you can implement softens and ground controls.

We manouvre our centre of gravity below our opponent, pull them off balance and roll them over our hip before we place (or drop) them on the ground.

Hapkido is the combination use of strikes, joint locks and throws in a self defence situation. The primary aim is to diffuse and escape, before any escalation occurs.

Our training consists of cardio to warm up the body, stretching to get ourselves flexible, agility training to stay fast and mobile and then.....

An encyclopaedias worth of self defence methods. Every lock, throw, defence, kicking technique, hand striking technique and more is learned, practiced and perfected over years of training.
