TGSL26 Legends of the Loop and their Rigs - Welcome back Cap 8 from TGSL25 - Marcus Lee - of Tenambit NSW.

“I’m back for a second attempt at The Great South Eastern Loop, after finishing up in Boorowa on the second day in 2025 and turning with my tail between my legs back to Goulburn for a train ride home.

Still on the Surly Midnight Special, but this time with the luxury of gears - SRAM Rival 1x11, with 34t chainring and 11-51t cassette.

Sticking with the 48mm Tufo Thundero HD tyres on S***k Wing 22 rims and Hope Pro II Evo rear hub and Shutter Precision PD-7 front - I had to rebuild the front wheel in the last week after the original dynamo hub gave up the ghost (too many training kilometres - NOT!)
Some fancy new Yokozuna Ultimo cable actuated hydraulic brakes, with compression-less housing - they feel awesome!

Redshift Shockstop Stem, with Aliexpress knockoff Redshift Kitchen Sink Bars are the same, but with the addition of the Farr Aero Bolt-On - for the aero (and positional) gains!

Everything else is much the same as last year - Brooks Cambium saddle, Revelate bags, Busch + Muller lights, K-Lite USB charger, Coros Dura for navigation and Garmin Messenger for tracking/emergency/messaging.

Going to rely on accommodation along the way,  which is a bit of a change to how I usually approach my adventures, with the aim of carrying a little bit less.
Looking forward to getting out there and riding my bike in some beautiful places!

“Very excited to get the loop underway. I’m riding a 2022 Bossi grit SX with a modified 2 x GRX, 48/29 on the front and 11/40 on the back.

Tailfin rear bag, frame bag and top tube bag. Route werks handlebar bag.

Ay up front lights mounted low on the fork crown.

Not camping, the plan is to make it to a pub each night.

Bossi Bicycles Tailfin Route Werks

The 17km climb up to Dead Horse Gap from Tom Groggin on The Alpine Way is one of Australia’s iconic climbs rising 1100m in 17km with an average gradient of 8% it’s a terrific way to spend a couple of hours. Weather on this section can be highly variable with temps dropping below freezing at the summit overnight not uncommon in late October riders need to be prepared. With a full moon on the 26th riders may enjoy bright evenings of the weather is clear and riding through the alps at night by moonlight is one of life’s greatest experiences. Thanks to Ben Birt for the great footage and Paul Rowan for being a legend!

“I’m riding the GSEL as Di Mason - who’s a friend of mine - told me about it last year. She raved about the event and I thought I’d give it a go. I’ve never done anything quite like this. I’m sure I’ll know all about my seat bones if I make it to the end- which is my goal. Doing in the time limit will be a bonus.

Ive had my bike for about 5 years. I bought it off a mate.Its  a large carbonda frame. The wheels are bontrager aeolus . SRAM apex. Rear  cassette 11-42 and a 42 at the front.

I’m trying to go as light as possible. I’m not camping if I can help it. Variety of topeak, restrap, and Aldi hopefully will do the trick although I’m still tossing up between a saddle bag or a front bar bag. Cheers Damo.”

TGSL26 Legends of the Loop and their Rigs - introducing Cap 23 - Clancy “Overflow” Carr - of Wollongong NSW.

“Hey I’m Clancy, a bike tragic from the Gong. Ed skillfully talked me into trying as my first ultra, so here we are. Lfg! 

Joining me on this *voyage is my Kona Rove DL. A versatile steel frame which has seen a few  iterations. For the Loop, it’s fitted with:

- Groupset: SRAM Rival 1x11-42T (stock)
- Wheels: 700c Elitewheels Aero+ (loud as sin) 
- Saddle: Brooks B17 (heavily abused)
- Nav: Garmin Edge 850 (the best of the worst)
- Bars: stock Kona + PD Neosonic Ergo+ 52 GMR (catchy! And with bar tape that only a father could love)
- Hydration: Dragonfly adaptor + 2 x 1L bidons
- Bags: mix of Apidura, AliE, Ortlieb, Restrap 
- Visibility: mix inc. Moon lights, CatEye mirror

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I’ve hence fitted the Loopers Choice™: 40mm GravelKings SS. Eagle eyed readers may notice they are, in fact, pink. And thus better.

My goal is just to finish within the cut-off times which is my only hope to finish. 🥲 I’m opting for accom each night too, so packing light. 

I’m also a big fan of World Bicycle Relief - amazing charity; they provide bulletproof bikes to ppl in need. Donate to my campaign while u watch my (slow) dot? 

*If nothing else, the full frame bag and deep dish rims will act as a sail to whisk me along. ⛵

“Bike: Merida Silex 2021 alloy model.
11-51 cassette, 34t chainring, maxxis rambler 40mm tyres, 50mm riser aero bars, running flats and plan on alternating between the 5 10s and the sandals.
Basic 3 dry bags setup - one for the tent, one for the sleeping pad and one for everything else. Couple of feed bags for snacks and bits and pieces.

Planning on camping most nights with the occasional pub stay depending on the weather and the body :) “

“Keen to get loopy on this — my 2023 Cervélo Áspero-5. A Marketplace find late last year that reignited my penchant for two-wheeled adventures, and apparently my willingness to spend money on them.

SRAM Force AXS 1x with a 40T chainring (36T is under consideration, along with my life choices) and a 10–44 cassette. Reserve 40/44 wheels wrapped in 45mm Continental Terra Speeds should hopefully strike a reasonable balance between grip and rolling efficiency.

I added some skis up front last week to give the hands a few more options, plus wireless Blips, which have proved surprisingly useful. Tailfin cargo rack and top tube bag for luggage, with room to add another bag if my packing optimism exceeds reality.

That’s the setup. Now to see how it goes when the road gets long and the snacks run low..”

“My rig is a Trek checkpoint sl5, had been thinking about getting a gravel bike for a few years and decided to commit once I signed up. Standard setup of 11-44 with Bontrager Paradigm tubeless.
Have fitted profile bars with 70mm riser, Ortlieb bags. Taking my Grayl Geopress to double as water filter and storage. Looking forward to the challenge of it and my bike and me getting a bit lighter each day!”
