Put a group of basketball coaches together and the conversation gets real pretty quickly.

Strong opinions. Passion for the game. Plenty of ideas.

Jacqui McConville spent some time recently with the rep coaches at Basketball ACT as part of a broader engagement and review process focused on improving the program.

There’s a real difference when people know the purpose is improvement, not politics.

That’s where good engagement and independent facilitation can make a big difference.

Really enjoying being part of this work and looking forward to continuing to support the program.

Today we celebrated the success and expansion of the Clubs SA Club Development Program.

Our presenters and facilitators came together to recognise the impact the program is having across South Australian clubs. The expansion of the program now allows Clubs SA to provide training and support to all clubs in South Australia. Training modules include governance, constitutions, sponsorship management, finance, grants, navigating conflict, volunteer management and more.

Clubs SA gratefully acknowledges the for its funding of the program, helping us strengthen clubs and the communities they support.

Thank you to everyone involved in delivering and supporting this growing program.

Recently spent time with the team at Hockey SA working through conflict, communication and some of the challenges that come with leading people and clubs in sport.

What always stands out in these sessions is how much people care about doing a good job.

Conflict is part of every sporting environment.
What matters is having the confidence and tools to navigate those moments well.

Really appreciated the openness, discussion and willingness to lean into some of the harder conversations.

Thanks to for having me.

This word cloud is from a recent webinar.

I asked:

What comes to mind when you think about conflict?

Take a second to look at it.

No one is thinking clear, calm or constructive.

And that shows in how people respond.

They avoid it.
They react too quickly.
Or they step into things that aren’t actually theirs to carry.

In clubs, we’re often dealing with situations that aren’t directly about us — but we’re still responsible for managing them.

That’s not easy.

And it’s usually where things either settle… or escalate.

This is a big part of the work we do through the Club Conflict Compass.

Helping people step into those moments a bit more steadily.

👏 What an incredible turnout!

Over 50 participants joined us online last night for our Club Conflict Compass workshop - a fantastic reflection of how important this topic is for clubs across our region.

A huge thank you to Jacqui McConville from JMX Solutions for delivering such a practical and engaging session, equipping clubs with the tools and confidence to better navigate conflict.

💬 One of the standout messages from the night:
“We don’t need to fix everything - just don’t ignore it. Small actions shift culture. Your calm response models your code of conduct and club values.”

A simple but powerful reminder that how we respond as leaders plays a big role in shaping positive, respectful club environments.

Thanks again to everyone who joined us - we’re excited to see these learnings put into action across our clubs 💪

Most committee burnout in clubs doesn’t happen because the workload is too big.

It happens because the work becomes emotionally heavy.

Unhappy members.
Complaints landing in inboxes.
Decisions that someone will always disagree with.

Add that on top of work, family and volunteering your time and it can start to wear people down.

Most committee members care deeply about their club.
They want to do the right thing.

What helps is having support, good conversations within the committee, and a clear way of handling difficult situations when they arise.

Strong clubs look after the people running them.

If you've served on committees — what part of the role did you find most challenging?

Clubs do incredible things in their communities.

Behind the scenes though, committees often end up dealing with some pretty tough moments.

Complaints.
Misunderstandings.
People feeling frustrated or unheard.

The Club Conflict Compass workshops on 28 and 29 April are designed to help club leaders handle those situations with more confidence.

If you’re involved in running a club — committee member, president, coach or volunteer — the session is built around the kinds of situations you’re already dealing with.

Recently I delivered the Club Conflict Compass workshop at Unley Oval’s community centre on behalf of four local councils working hard to support their community clubs across Adelaide.

Different organisations and clubs, different roles — but very similar challenges.

When people care about their communities, there are always strong views involved.

What I always appreciate in sessions like this is the willingness in the room to talk honestly about those moments that can be hard to manage.

Good conversations make better decisions.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the discussion.
