A beautiful voice is not enough.

We remember singers who make us feel something.

Interpretation is not about adding artificial emotions or dramatic gestures.

It grows from understanding the music, the text, the character and then finding the vocal colours that make them come alive.

Technique gives you freedom. But what you do with that freedom is what makes you an artist.

This is an important part of my individual work with singers.

Imagine hearing a prayer in the language Jesus himself would have spoken.

This choir is singing in Aramaic, a language with roots stretching back thousands of years.

Whatever you believe, there is something deeply moving about hearing these ancient words brought to life through human voices.

Your audition video may be the first impression you ever make on a casting director, agent or opera house.

It doesn’t need to be a perfect studio production.

But it should represent your voice honestly, show you at your best and make people want to hear more.

Repertoire choice, vocal condition, interpretation, presentation and even the way you position yourself in front of the camera can make a difference.

Sometimes a strong singer simply chooses the wrong material to represent themselves.

Chiaroscuro is one of the essential qualities of classical singing:
the balance between brightness and darkness in the voice.

I often use the U vowel to help singers move more elegantly through the passaggio into the upper range, while A can help create a stronger connection with the body.

But the real art lies in balancing these different vowel qualities, especially through the middle voice, so that the voice remains one instrument from bottom to top.

Listen to Giacomo Lauri-Volpi, first as a young tenor, and then still singing at almost 80.

One of the great tenors of the 20th century, Lauri-Volpi left behind not only remarkable recordings, but also ideas about singing and technique that influenced generations of tenors.

For me, this is one of the most valuable traditions in classical singing: knowledge being passed from one generation of singers to the next.

Rafael Quirant is making history in Spain.

For the first time, a sopranist is performing the role of Cherubino on a major opera stage in Spain, in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro at the Auditorio de Tenerife.

Rafael brings a brilliant, clear sound to the role, with musical simplicity and tasteful ornamentation.

Performances continue on October 13, 15 and 17.

Here is Nadine Sierra singing Rodolfo’s aria, a role written for tenor.

We’re seeing more and more singers exploring repertoire traditionally written for another gender and sometimes another voice type.

And it can reveal completely new colours in music we thought we knew.

But does voice type matter when we simply listen to the artistry?
