Three completely different interpretations of O mio babbino caro 🎭

One sings it with the great classical elegance and luxurious phrasing we know from legendary sopranos like Renée Fleming.

One version goes much more into the lighter, playful spirit of opera buffa and the "earlier Puccini" style.

And then there is my student Lidia.

Simple. Natural. Honest.

No artificial pathos.
No imitation.

Just a young singer finding HER own connection to the aria.

And honestly?

That is what great singing should ultimately become.

Not copying.

Not “sounding operatic.”

But developing an authentic artistic identity.

Inside my Classical Singing Online Masterclass, you can watch real singer transformations step by step — and begin transforming your own voice and artistry yourself. 🎭

Look at those crazy conductors 😅

And the funniest part?

They are some of the most respected musicians in the world.

Honestly, I thought I was doing strange things when trying to help my singers understand rhythm, emotion, phrasing, and musical energy

But this is exactly what great musicians often do:they don’t just “conduct” music.

They physically LIVE it.

And somehow that energy transfers directly into the orchestra, the singers, and the audience.

What do YOU think about conductors like this?Genius? Crazy? Both? 😄

What do YOU think?

Did Maria Callas’ voice change after the dramatic weight loss? 🎭

This is one of the most discussed transformations in opera history.

Some people believed the weight loss made her more elegant, magnetic, cinematic.

Others believed something in the voice changed afterwards.

And singers should take this discussion seriously.

Because the body IS part of the instrument.

Breath support, muscular balance, posture, hormones, energy availability

all of this can influence the voice.

This does NOT mean singers should stay overweight.

But it DOES mean that extreme dieting and pressure for “opera model bodies” can affect vocal stability.

A great singing voice is not built by starving the body.

It is built through balance, coordination, strength, and healthy vocal function.

Inside my international singers community 🌍 we talk openly about vocal technique, body balance, artistry, and the realities singers rarely discuss.

"When I am laid in earth” from Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas is one of the most heartbreaking scenes in all of opera. 💔

Dido has just sent Aeneas away after his betrayal.

He offers to stay.

But emotionally, she is already somewhere else.

The trust has been destroyed.

What makes this aria so devastating is that Dido is not screaming or fighting anymore.

She has reached a quiet, almost unbearable sadness and acceptance.

Purcell wrote this opera around 1689, and ironically it was performed only once during his lifetime before disappearing for almost 200 years.

Today, Dido’s Lament is considered one of the greatest expressions of grief ever written in music.

And Marianne Beate Kielland captures this emotional world so beautifully.

What do YOU think is happening emotionally in this aria? 🎭

Laura Bretan sings Nessun Dorma beautifully ✨

But honestly… can somebody PLEASE explain why every second singer on a talent show ends up singing this aria? 😅

At this point it doesn’t even matter whether the contestant is a tenor, soprano, baritone, crossover singer, or someone who accidentally walked onto the stage.

Somehow it always becomes NESDUN DORMA ( or O MIO BABBINO CARO)

Don’t get me wrong.

It’s a fantastic aria.

But opera has HUNDREDS of incredible pieces.

And yet talent shows seem to believe opera begins with Nessun Dorma and ends with O mio babbino caro 😂

Laura Bretan delivers a truly impressive performance here.

But it still raises the question:

Have these two arias become the official anthem of televised opera singing?

What aria would YOU choose instead to introduce audiences to opera?

Emma Pennell singing Mimi’s famous aria from La Bohème ✨

Mimi is traditionally portrayed as a fragile young woman dying of tuberculosis.

Emma Pennell does not fit that traditional operatic image.

And yet something fascinating happens after only a few seconds:

many listeners stop thinking about appearanceand simply start listening to the voice.

Because the voice fits beautifully.

The emotion feels real.

And suddenly the bigger question appears:

How important is physical realism in opera today?

Should singers look exactly like the characters they portray?

Or are voice, artistry, and emotional truth more important?

Emma Pennell is currently one of Canada’s most exciting young operatic sopranos and is building an impressive career.

What do YOU think?

Andrew De Leon walks onto the stage looking like he just escaped from a gothic fantasy movie.

Dark makeup.
Black clothes.
Mysterious energy.

And then suddenly… a countertenor voice comes out 😅

The judges clearly did NOT expect that....;)

As a makeup artist and singer, Andrew became one of the most unforgettable talent show contestants ever.

And yes… he sings O mio babbino caro.

Again 😂

At this point I am honestly starting to believe that talent shows think the entire operatic repertoire consists of exactly two arias:

Nessun Dorma

and

O mio babbino caro.

Don’t get me wrong.

He makes a huge impression.

But can somebody PLEASE introduce television producers to the rest of opera? 🎭

What aria would YOU choose instead?

One of these voices became world famous.

The other helped create it. 🤍

This is Luciano Pavarotti singing together with his father.

And somehow that makes this moment even more moving.

Because behind every great artist, there is often someone who first opened the door to music.

A parent.

A teacher.

A family tradition.

A first song shared together.

Both Pavarotti and his father are gone now.

But their voices remain.

And maybe that is one of the beautiful things about music:

Some voices never truly leave us.

Do you think they are still singing together somewhere? ✨

Most child prodigies never become great adult singers.

That is the uncomfortable truth.

When Jackie Evancho became famous on America's Got Talent, millions of people fell in love with her angelic voice.

But growing up is one of the biggest challenges any young singer can face.

The body changes.

The voice changes.

The entire instrument changes.

And suddenly the singer has to rediscover who they are.

Today, Jackie is 25 years old and still evolving as an artist.

She no longer sounds like the little girl who amazed the world.

And honestly?

That is exactly how it should be.

A voice is not meant to stay the same forever.

It is meant to grow.
