These are things most IELTS tutors don't tell you about IELTS speaking part 3

We have taught many students who have often taken IELTS several times already, and they rarely understand speaking part 3

1️⃣ Your IELTS speaking examiner chooses the questions they asked you based on your performance in parts 1 and 2.

✅The examiners have different sets of questions to choose from, depending on the level of the candidate.

If you are band 7.5 or 8.0, the questions will be harder than if you are band 5.5 or 6.0.

✅The examiner then asks you follow up questions, based on your answers. They create these follow up questions themselves. This makes it more of a discussion. They may ask one follow up questions, or several.

2️⃣ You can ask the IELTS examiner for help

If you do not understand the question the examiner asks, you can ask them to repeat it, clarify it or paraphrase it.

Use phrases like:

"When you say....do you mean....?"
"What exactly do you mean by.....?"
"I don't think I understand the question. Could you paraphrase it for me?"

This is natural communication.

3️⃣ The examiner might argue with you

If you give your opinion on a topic, the examiner might disagree with you, to see if you can justify your ideas, or if you can explain the opposite point of view.

This is a way for you to show your language ability.

The more you understand the IELTS speaking test, the better your performance will be.

We have seen many reels and videos telling you that you should stop talking after 1 minute 30 seconds in IELTS speaking part 2.

🗣️They say you should "leave them wanting more"

🗣️They tell you that the instructions are "...you have 1-2 minutes for this...." so you should aim for the middle.

As former IELTS speaking examiners, we can tell you this is....

❌ NOT TRUE ❌

✅ You need to show the examiner that you can talk fluently and coherently for two minutes with little preparation

✅ You also need to show the examiner that you have a good range of vocabulary and grammar, so they can give you a good score

For IELTS speaking part 2, keep talking until the speaking examiner says 'Thank you'.

Don't worry if your answer is not 'finished'. Just keep talking.

Did you know that there are two types of advantages and disadvantages essay in IELTS writing task 2?

You need to write them in different ways to get a high score, so make sure you know the difference.

👉What are the advantages and disadvantages?

Here you just need to describe both sides.

✍️Write two advantages in body paragraph 1

✍️and two disadvantages in body paragraph 2

In the conclusion, just summarize your four points.

👉Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

Here you have to choose which side you think it stronger.

Do you think the advantages are stronger or the disadvantages? 🤔

✍️Write your opinion in the Introduction and conclusion.

✍️You also need to consider the best way to organize your body paragraphs.

✍️Make sure the side you agree with is in the body paragraph just before the conclusion

If you are preparing for IELTS writing, my number 1 piece of advice for you is....
...learn how to write both tasks.

Do not just take practice tests on websites. You cannot get a good score if you do not know what you are doing.

Spend time learning HOW to write the tasks first.

THEN do practice tests.

A lovely review from Rafi, whose daughter Kate helped get a band 8.0 in her IELTS exam.

Rafi's daughter, M. is a student at an international school in Qatar and needs a high score in the IELTS exam to apply for medical school.

M. already had an excellent level of English, as she was born in the UK. Kate helped her to understand the IELTS test properly, so she could maximise her score.

As usual, they started with a mock IELTS test, to identify her strengths and weaknesses. She had great listening and speaking skills, but needed help improving her performance in reading and writing.

Kate focused on:

👉techniques to do different types of reading questions
👉how to manage time during the reading test
👉the basic structure for all academic writing task 1s (introductory sentence - overview - main body)
👉analysis and language for different academic writing task 1s (line graph, dynamic bar chart, table, pie chart, static bar chart, table and pie chart, mixed graphs, processes and maps)
👉analysis, idea generation and structures for different essay question types (problem-solution, advantages and disadvantages, discussion, opinion and two-part questions)

M. was given IELTS writing tasks to complete after every class, which Kate gave her feedback on to help her improve. M. also did reading and listening tests online to improve her speed and get used to the computer-based format.

M worked very hard and was rewarded with an overall band 8.0!
