Some waders are a bit magical for me. Pratincoles are one of them. Mostly because they are rare in Uk plus very unique looking too. Like a cross between a lapwing species and a hirundine species. I love watching them in sky. Seeing juvenile Collared Pratincoles up close at a breeding site was great

So I haven’t jumped on a chartered flight to Shetland for the Egyptian Nightjar but it did prompt me to finished editing my photos of Egyptian Nightjars at a breeding site in Abu Dhabi back in June this year. Both adults and juveniles in the photos. The adults were very worn and in primary moult. The juveniles had big broad fringes to the coverts and pale diffused edges to the primaries. Lovely birds

1. Part of reason why i don’t like ballon’s (plastic stuff innit).

2. I THOUGHT THIS WAS GOING TO BE A GREY-HEADED SWAMPHEN!!! (or Purple Swamphen in old or new money depending on what it was called before the split and then lumping, I’ve lost track)

Well I was gutted but that’s birding. Sometimes it’s bingo and other times it’s like a slow old train not getting anywhere too fast. You’ve gotta learn to enjoy those days too
